Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum), 6 -20 ft., many varieties, prefers part shade and will show tip burn in overly hot locations, likes moisture.

Japanese Maple is a small to medium size deciduous tree that develops a spreading canopy habit. Native to China, Japan and Korea, Acer palmatum is widely used in the Bay Area in Asian gardens and more generally. They are used as specimen and visual accent features in courtyards and protected microclimate spaces.Over 1,000 cultivars of this species have been introduced, providing many combinations of growth habits, leaf character and seasonal color.
