Lion’s Tail (Leonotis), evergreen, 3-6 ft., showy orange blooms summer/fall, easy and fast growing, loves sun and heat, native of South Africa, drought tolerant once established, deer resistant.

Mint-family member from South Africa. Hairy, square stems carry opposite pairs of narrow, toothed, 2- to 5-in.-long leaves. Blooms in summer and into autumn, with showy, dense whorls of tubular, deep orange, 2-in. flowers covered with furlike coat of fine hairs. Striking if kept well groomed. If frost hits, cut plant back to live growth in spring. Naturalized in Hawaii. There is also a white-flowered form, L. l. albiflora, and a dwarf variety.
