Pincushion Flower  (Scabiosa), 2-3 ft., lavender, yellow and other colors, excellent cut flower, reseeds, full sun.

Stamens protrude beyond curved surface of flower head, giving illusion of pins stuck into a cushion. Bloom begins in midsummer, continues until winter if flowers are deadheaded or cut regularly. Good in mixed or mass plantings. Excellent cut flowers. Very easy and reseeds.

Scabiosa atropurpurea

From southern Europe. Grows 2 1/2 to 3 ft. tall, 1 ft. wide. Oblong, coarsely toothed leaves. Many long, wiry stems carry flowers to 2 in. or more wide, in colors from blackish purple to salmon pink, rose, white.

Scabiosa columbaria

Native to Europe, Africa, Asia. To 2 ft. high and wide. Finely cut gray-green leaves. Flowers to 3 in., in lavender blue, pink, or white; almost all year in mildest areas.
