Matilija Poppy

26 Feb

Matilija Poppy (Romneya coulteri), 5 to 8 ft., huge white flowers with yellow centers in spring, blue-green leaves, native, drought resistant, deer resistant, good cut flower.

This large perennial plant has an upright habit and spreads by underground stems. Native to California and northern Baja, it occurs in sunny places, and in cultivation grows best in well drained soils with little water after the flower cycle. Foliage and stems die by the end of summer and should be cut to the ground to accommodate new growth. Excellent in Mediterranean style gardens and as a high impact background plant for sunny borders.
